Awakening the Dreamer, Changing the Dream Youth Stories, Dreams and Plans

 

            While the Awakening the Dreamer symposium is touching people all over the world, it is particularly inspiring young people and those whose calling is to support young people as being a cultural asset in this continued awakening. Here are a few samples of some of the extraordinary youth symposium work coming out of the Awakening the Dreamer community.

Satya and Kathryn presented a two-hour concentrated Symposium to high school students, teachers and parents. They also presented a forty-minute Awakening presentation to 4 classes of public elementary school 5th graders.

19 college students are riding across Massachusetts to build a movement for bold and immediate emissions reductions, canvassing door to door.  Having been trained as facilitators, these college students invite folks to attend Awakening the Dreamer Symposiums they present in most of the towns they visit.  Between the 3 teams, over 25 symposiums are expected during their 8-week summer trek.

After a Symposium and joining the first youth training, Angela had a vision – she is developing the plan and team to create a school on wheels.  The 2010 cross-country tour will have the Symposium at its core curriculum, and include training in nonviolent communication, permaculture, co-creative living, storytelling and arts.

 

 

UIC – Chinese university experiments with Symposium expanding its innovate education process

This Chinese university, fourth largest in the country, is most unique for it focuses on ‘whole person education’. Twenty professors and students trained to be facilitators in June and are incorporating Symposium principles into campus curriculum and vision.

At Edmunds Junior College Victor cultivated a symposium design team from the campus sustainability and diversity communities.   The ensuing successfully 200-person morning Symposium with faculty, staff and students was followed by afternoon breakout sessions focused on getting into action around several questions about deepening campus culture, including bringing sustainability to the school and the larger community. Victor, co-founded For the Grandchildren, has found ATD an effective tool to implement the organization’s intergenerational activation vision.

 

 

 

BioTU: Sustainability Education & Awareness Projects, Mexico

BioTU is beginning to mobilize, energize, and activate the Mexican population, again with the Symposium at its core, around sustainability. Fernando and a growing team have deeply awakened students, citizens, and agency and business leaders with the Symposium. Fernando’s vision grew on his year-long tour across the States to schools & campus on a Bio Bus mobile class room. Through BioTU, he is beginning to bring the Bio Bus lessons and the underlying spirit of ATD throughout Mexico.

Last month a multi-generational team of 11 dedicated facilitators nourished, co-created and energized the hearts and souls of 22 participants (aging from 17 to 32) at the first ever “Awakening the Dreamer Youth Facilitator Training”.  They have returned to their communities across the US & Ireland to awaken, engage and active their neighbors.

Via Facebook, Matthias organized the dynamic Malaysian Eco Warriors.  200 participants responded to his Facebook invitation to experience the Symposium last month, and 60 filling the facilitator training the next day.  More blessed unrest is awakening Malaysian.

A number of UK facilitators have a passion for sharing the Symposium with youth.  After a recent Symposium with over 100 youth, valuable feedback was gained to even more powerfully engage UK youth.

The tightly woven partnership between Awakening the Dreamer and the Heritage Institute began to flourish in May and April, when Mike introduced the two Awakening the Dreamer symposiums to teachers and students within the Institute via a workshop: Be the Change.

 

 

Collaboration to create a youth Symposium and the possibility of many more to come!

ReEnergize Texas Summit- Symposium grounds campus climate change activists

Praween, NWF SW Campus Climate Change coordinator, organized ReEnergize Texas Summit, a state-wide version of Power Shift.  The weekend of training for action around climate change in the Austin, Texas (the state capital) began with a Symposium grounding these young leaders in the broadest context for their important work.

Growing a Symposium for students to be delivered by teens, Bellingham, WA

After delivering a Symposium to a group of high school students, Tom and Leslie recently shared ATD AV material and activities with 7 teens in a focus group gaining insights to make the content more powerfully activating with teenagers. They are building the foundation to train and support youth in delivering the Symposium to their peers.

Powershift 2009 mobilized 12,000 youth (from every state in ht nation & 22 other countries) to gain climate change organizing skills, and converge on Washington, DC to awaken politicians.  1200 participated in Awakening the Dreamer filled with spontaneous tera & cheer leaving with their activism rooted in the Symposium’s holistic framing and with a grounded sense of optimism.  Some were so moved, they hosted &/or facilitated symposiums at their own campuses; including: Monika Tippie at Earlham College,  Indiana, Abi Marshall at Evergreen College,Washington, Abby Pardick at Knox College, Illinois, Patricia Riesat UW-LaCrosse, Wisconsin and Laura Buzek at her high school in Virginia.

Joanne shared two symposiums with 120 14-15 year olds last year. She tailored the symposium to complement their school’s environmental studies curriculum, while encouraging creative thinking using small group theatre work as part of their Symposium.
