Instructions for downloading various types of files

Downloading Bit torrent files

Many ATD video files are available for download. Depending on the size of the file, the download may take anywhere from several hours up to a couple days, depending on the speed of your internet connection and how many “peers” also download the file. You’ll need special free software to download the file.

Requirements:

Apple Macintosh computer with Intel processor (Macbook, Macbook Pro, Mac Pro, and some Mac Minis)

at least 1GB of RAM

Keynote 4.0 (included with iWork 08)

Fast internet connection (DSL or Cable)

Recommended browser: Firefox (some people have had difficulties with Safari)

Overview:

To distribute video files to everyone as quickly and easily as possible, we're using BitTorrent, an online method of distributing large amounts of data. In order to use BitTorrent you will need to install Transmission, a torrent downloader.

To find out more about how BitTorrent works click here.

To find out more about how Transmission works click here.

Specific Steps:

1) Click here to download the latest version of Transmission and add it to your applications folder

NOTE: After you download, if you see a little red and grey lever icon named "Transmission", drag it to your Applications folder. Alternatively, if you see white disk icon named something like "Transmission-1.xx.dmg" double click it, and then drag the red and grey icon inside to your Applications folder. Open Transmission before going to step 2.

2) Go to Source file section and select the file you wish to download. After choosing a file, double click on the file and it should automatically open in Transmission. Transmission will then download the file to your computer.

NOTE: If when you click on the above link, you are prompted with a window saying that this application was downloaded from the internet, click "Open". The download should then begin.

3) Keep Transmission running until download is complete, or longer.  Transmission will tell you when the download is complete. If you'd like to help other facilitators download files faster, please just leave Transmission running, even after your download is finished. Through the magic of BitTorrent, your computer will automatically help everyone else get their files faster!  Once the transfer is complete, just open the DMG file you downloaded by double-clicking it, and then drag the KEY file inside to anywhere you'd like (say your desktop.) As long as you have Keynote 08 installed, you should be able to open that KEY file by double-clicking it.
