Following these steps to prepare the download should take about fifteen minutes, though the download itself can take anywhere from several hours to a few days.
1) Download and install Transmission, a BitTorrent client for Macs. Go to http://www.transmissionbt.com and click on"Download Now."

It's okay if it doesn't specifically say 1.76. Whatever version is listed will be fine.
2) On the download page, click the link under "Mac OS X."

3) Transmission downloads! The browser's Downloads Window will look like this:

When the progress bar is complete, Transmission has fully downloaded.
4) Next, you need to download the torrent file. In this example, it's on the Materials Page:

The torrent file is small and will download quickly. To clarify: the torrent file is not the DVD file itself. Think of it as a seed. (And, while these instructions use the Symposium DVD as a specific example, they'll work for any file you need to download via BitTorrent.)
5) When the progress bar in Safari's Downloads window is finished, double click on the icon of the page with the lever icon.

You'll probably get a scary warning window:

Click "Open."
6) The confirmation window may refer to a different filename entirely--in this example, V1-DVD.torrent becomes VIV Full 3.iso--but that's okay. The name of the torrent and the name of the downloading file don't always match (though it's nice when they do). Click "add."

And now, the waiting begins. Consider this the plant (the DVD file) growing from the seed (the torrent file).
You may notice that as soon as you begin downloading, the file appears to be fully formed in the Downloads folder. It's not. BitTorrent is just a tease.

7) Go on about your business, but keep Transmission is open in the background. If you have to reboot your computer, be sure to start the program again.
Check Transmission now and again to see the progress of the download.

8) When the progress bar is fully green, congratulations--that means you've successfully downloaded the file.

Just open the DMG file you downloaded by double-clicking it, and then drag the KEY file inside to anywhere you'd like.
Now, take your newly downloaded file and go change the world!
